CAS 105-46-4

sec-Butyl acetate (secondary butyl acetate) is a clear colorless liquid with a fruit odor. It is miscible with a number organic solvents; almost insoluble in water. sec-Butyl acetate can be easily hydrolyzed in presence of acids or alkali solutions.

Production.

sec-Butyl acetate is prepared by direct esterification of acetic acid with secondary butyl alcohol at 100-110°C in the presence of H2SO4 in continuous process. sec-Butyl acetate is rectified as ternary azeotrope with water and sec-butanol.

Uses.

sec-Butyl acetate is applied:

  • as a solvent for paints and lacquers, adhesives;
  • as a solvent for cellulose esters, natural and synthetic resins, vegetable oils and fats;
  • as an agent for extraction of natural flavorings and antibiotics;
