tert-butyl alcohol

Product name tert-butyl alcohol
Synonyms 2-methyl-2-propanol
tertiary butyl alcohol
GOST no data
CAS 75-65-0

tert-Butyl alcohol is a clear, colorless, non-corrosive liquid. It is miscible with a number of organic solvents and water. Isobutanol forms azeotropic solution with it (11.8% H2O by mass, bp 79.9°C). tert-Butyl alcohol is a typical aliphatic alcohol;

tert-Butanol is manufactured by interaction of 40-65% sulfuric acid with isobutylene from C4 fraction of thermal or catalytic naphtha cracking. Then tert-butyl sulfuric acid is hydrolyzed to give tert-butanol. C4is used being previously rectified from n-butenes and butadiene.

Tertiary butyl alcohol is used:

  • as a non-corrosive and non-reactive solvent for chemical reactions;
  • as a non-surfactant compatibilizer for many solvent blends;
  • as an alkylating agent in organic synthesis;
  • as an intermediate product in manufacture of high purity isobutylene;
  • as an intermediate product in tert-butylhydroperoxide preparation;
  • as a source to produce alkylated aromatic and nitrogen compounds in mid acidic conditions;
  • as an antiseptic;

  • Manufacturer(s) JSC "Nizhnekamskneftekhim" Inc.
